Kind of felt my other piece didn’t suit what I had in mind originally. It’s nicer to think of what might be happening up there now (depending on your beliefs), and personally I like to imagine Michael’s already there getting into Whitney’s ear like two, old friends.

and can we just talk about what she meant…
to all those little girls of color who needed some pop princess that looked like them in their lives? I never wanted to be a pop princess—I loved her fucking songs and i loved her so much—but I wanted to be punk and head banger and skater chick—so I never needed that.
but i knew so many girls of color who wanted the bright colors and puffy hair and super cute 80s clothes—and Whitney gave that to them. back then, there was NO pop princess of color but whitney. if you wanted a woman of color in the pop world role model sort of thing, you had to go back to diana ross who was amazing (and still actively singing and all) in the 80s—and I think aretha made that pink cadillac, which was crap, oh, and tina turner of course, with her what’s love got to do with it—but they were *OLD*. they weren’t fresh and young and could keep up with madonna (and debbie gibson and that red head, remember her? what was her name?) with trend setting and style. whitney had it all. and back then…that *meant* something to little girls who saw *nobody* like them on vh1 or mtv…or fuck, just on regular old television…(I think the cosby show was the *only* show w/people of color on the mainstream networks…can’t remember cuz we didn’t have t.v. for big parts of my childhood)…

There are some people that enter your life that you never even meet and yet, they have the greatest impact on you.
There were women, beautiful black women, I spotted on television and ached to be like - to meet, to know personally, to befriend, to just be. Diana, Tina, Janet, Dorothy, Patti, Diahann, Lena, Phylicia, Lady Day, and of course - Whitney Houston. What girl didn’t?!
For as long as I can remember, I have always loved Whitney. Through the good, the bad, and the “receipts”.
The very first cassette I owned was the soundtrack to The Bodyguard. Queen of the Night was my FAVORITE song from the entire album. I listened to that cassette so much that eventually, Whitney started sounding like a William and the tape slowed down until it eventually wouldn’t play anymore.
How many times I spent butchering “I Will Always Love You” in the tub or the many times I would sneak and watch Waiting to Exhale when I thought my grandmother wasn’t paying attention.
Nippy, you were always my girl. And you’re going to always be my girl.
I pray that Bobbi Kristina grows up to be a strong, young woman. And that Cissy has the strength to carry on what you started with your daughter.
I will always love you.

I’ve learned to live with rage. In some ways, it’s my rage that keeps me going. Without it, I would have been whipped long ago. With it, I got a lot more songs to sing.

[Photo post: 9 black and white photos of Etta James, in various states of glamour, power, and poise.]
You can’t fake this music. You might be a great singer or a great musician but, in the need, that’s got nothing to do with it. It’s how you connect to the songs and to the history behind them.

RIP: Etta James, the legendary genre-spanning singer who gave the world many memorable hits including “At Last” and “The Wallflower,” has passed away. She was 73.
James, who was diagnosed with leukemia 2010, had been in poor health for some time.
Affectionately known as Miss Peaches, the Matriarch of R&B had multiple Grammys to her name, and was inducted into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame.
Incidentally, the man who discovered James, Johnny Otis, passed away just yesterday.
Below: James sings “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” in 1962.
