There are some people that enter your life that you never even meet and yet, they have the greatest impact on you.
There were women, beautiful black women, I spotted on television and ached to be like - to meet, to know personally, to befriend, to just be. Diana, Tina, Janet, Dorothy, Patti, Diahann, Lena, Phylicia, Lady Day, and of course - Whitney Houston. What girl didn’t?!
For as long as I can remember, I have always loved Whitney. Through the good, the bad, and the “receipts”.
The very first cassette I owned was the soundtrack to The Bodyguard. Queen of the Night was my FAVORITE song from the entire album. I listened to that cassette so much that eventually, Whitney started sounding like a William and the tape slowed down until it eventually wouldn’t play anymore.
How many times I spent butchering “I Will Always Love You” in the tub or the many times I would sneak and watch Waiting to Exhale when I thought my grandmother wasn’t paying attention.
Nippy, you were always my girl. And you’re going to always be my girl.
I pray that Bobbi Kristina grows up to be a strong, young woman. And that Cissy has the strength to carry on what you started with your daughter.
I will always love you.
